NDF and Grecotel participated at the Workshop organized by the University of Crete in collaboration with the Heraklion Chamber of Commerce

The Workshop titled “The role of the University of Crete in the Sustainable Development and Responsible Entrepreneurship”: was held at the University on Monday, March 4, 2019 and it was focused on tourism and agriculture as the main branches of Crete's development. The significant comparative advantages of these two sectors can be the basis for innovative business strategies and practices that, assisted by the necessary policies and supported by the necessary knowledge, can create economic, social and environmental value towards sustainable development of the island of Crete.

Within this context, Mr. Dimitris Stebilis, Director of the Nikos Daskalantonakis – NDF organization and Dimitris M. Kalaidzidakis, Director of Operations, of the Grecotel Hotels & Resorts Company spoke about the “Dynamic relationship between primary sector and tourism: The pioneering example of AgrecoFarms”

Mr. Steliblis presented the general context between the Primary Sector and Tourism as well as the dynamism that governs this union and the importance of knowing the extraordinary potential of cultural tourism and agritourism. He also referred to the role of the newly established NDF in supporting producers and promoting actions related to local production, improvement and promotion.

Mr. Kalaidzidakis referred extensively to the example of the Nikos Daskalandonakis - Grecotel Group, as a pioneer in highlighting the importance and role of the primary sector. In particular, he referred to Grecotel's traditional farm, a unique achievement in the primary sector, where, through the Agrecofarms series of organic traditional products, they became worthy ambassadors of the real wealth of Crete and Greece.

The main purpose of the workshop was to raise awareness and information and to present good business practices. Finally, the workshop attempted to highlight the role of the University of Crete in the sustainable development of the island and aspires to mobilize multilateral initiatives amongst the stakeholders.

Sustainable development is a top priority issue for civil society, public administration, business and the academic community. According to the UN, sustainable development is the one that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development is built on three pillars: economic growth, environmental protection, social equality.
